Our communications practice is composed of multiple best-in-class brands including Travel Intelligence, Grifco, Hills Balfour, MMGY, the company's flagship integrated marketing agency, Myriad, NJF, NextFactor and Wagstaff. Together, we represent more than 400 travel and tourism marketing experts across the globe.︎︎︎ I am a creative professional with eight years of combined experience in graphic design and photography. I possess excellent communication skills and a passion for collaborating with other designers to develop unique and dynamic designs and layouts that produce clear brand messaging matched with boundary-pushing concepts. After attending the Kansas City Art Institute, I received the mentorship award from my department for creating a sense of community. I also received the Muriel Cooper award for boldly embracing technology within design upon graduating. In my own work, I strive to create visually striking compositions and pieces that offer an experience someone would want to share with others. Materials -KCAI Class of 2021 As a member of the 2021 KCAI graphic design class, our senior exhibition presented a unique opportunity for growth as we ventured into the virtual realm. Over weeks of collective brainstorming, we refined our concept and settled on the evocative title "the spaces between," intentionally stylized in lowercase. This title encapsulated the creative synergy and connections that defined our class and our collective design journey. Drawing inspiration from renowned designers' copywriting practices, we crafted engaging and concise content to effectively convey our message. We divided the exhibition responsibilities among class members, assigning Fiona Dougan and me several vital tasks. Our roles included planning, designing, building, and managing the main website, ensuring seamless interactivity and a visually stunning experience. Additionally, I took the initiative to record and edit video teasers for social media and handle class photography for promotional and documentation purposes. This ambitious project, the largest I've ever tackled, required commitment, attention to detail, and a keen understanding of design principles. The countless late nights, meticulous spreadsheets, extended Zoom calls, and persistence from me and my classmates materialized into a virtual exhibition. Though the show would have to be virtual due to the pandemic, we still wanted to begin our process by thinking of the show as a physical gallery space, but move beyond the exact recreation. We thought, “What would a gallery be like with no walls, ceiling, or floor?” This led to our first navigation concept, utilizing no-clip movement and ︎"windows" that referenced individual designers or projects. We used Mozilla Hubs to communicate this idea to the rest of the class. When we discovered that no-clip movement was unattainable due to our own limitations, we sought an alternative approach to transform the void into a three-dimensional space. We didn't want the site to be just another scrollable page, or a 3D room. That's when we began experimenting with 3D modeled objects, replacing the windows concept. The layout included a landing page, class list page, profiles, projects, project-by-category page, store page, and a dedicated page for miscellaneous media. Next, we presented various types of 3D objects to the class and discussed their potential uses. We aimed to represent projects with these objects, but also wanted each designer to have a unique object symbolizing them on the class list page. Considering the potential impact of heavy 3D objects on page loading times, the class collectively decided that each person would choose a glyph to represent themselves, and a low-poly style object for each of their five projects. Besides the number of pages, there was also a ton of media on each page, especially for the projects. This required a lot of content gathering and communication with our peers. We collected all the necessary assets from every classmate and seamlessly integrated them into their respective project pages. We repeated this process for each of the 13 students across both mobile and web platforms, resulting in the creation of more than 100 pages to host the projects on the site. Another innovative aspect of the development process centered around programming the background to evolve over time, reflecting the natural progression of sunset and sunrise. We devised a smart object that could read the user's local time and utilize this information to move a gradient along the x-axis, repeating this cycle daily. This unique feature dynamically activated the color palette, providing an engaging and immersive user experience. 05 Teaser Videos The goal was to develop a series of teasers that would conceptually connect to the show through carefully selected audio clips, while maintaining an air of mystery to captivate a broad audience. The aim was to differentiate this element from other shows, showcasing the unique approach taken for this particular graphic design school exhibition. Naturally, this called for incorporating the iconic David Lynch interview as a starting point, setting the stage for a truly distinct and memorable presentation. 06 Photography <img width="5184" had been ample time to plan a unique approach for this project. To echo the void motif and differentiate these portraits from others, the decision was made to utilize a fisheye lens with exaggerated foreshortening. This project aimed to support Black-owned businesses in the area by revamping the club's branding, signage, photography, and website. We started by conducting a competitive audit of nearby clubs and bars to ensure our rebranding not only better represented the club's character but also stood out among the competition. the club for social media posts, advertisements, and the new website. We documented the space and designed an ad template that echoed the checkerboard pattern and established a distinctive aesthetic on social media, tying together the club's bold red branding. A primary objective of the photography was to capture the tight-knit family atmosphere that the owner proudly presented. Teams create proposals that encompass everything from the basic concept and idea behind that year's event to the experiences and activities planned, as well as the materials required for these activities. As we were planning our approach to this event, COVID became an increasingly significant concern throughout March. Faced with this uncertainty, we had to adapt our in-person plans to a virtual format at the last minute. This pivotal moment challenged our team, but we managed to successfully redirect our proposal and transform all of our planned activities and materials into a take-home kit. Our final proposal was self-contained, clearly outlining our intentions and materials. We believe showcasing this proposal is the most effective way to present this project, as it demonstrates our adaptability and resilience in the face of unexpected challenges. Overall, our branding proposal helped solve the pain points associated with the virtual adaptation of the Nelson-Atkins Big Picnic event by identifying the need to adapt to fit the virtual environment. As college students, facing this challenge was doubly daunting. We are incredibly proud of our team's flexibility and creative problem-solving in overcoming these obstacles. Pain-points included: Limited engagement with attendees: Without the in-person aspect of the Big Picnic, it may be challenging to keep attendees engaged throughout the virtual event. This could lead to lower participation and less interest in the event overall. Technical difficulties: Virtual events can be challenging from a technical perspective, especially given the lack of precendence we had at the time. Lack of community: One of the most significant benefits of in-person events is the sense of community and connection that attendees can experience. With a virtual event, it may be more difficult to foster this sense of community, which could lead to a less satisfying experience for attendees especially for an event with a younger audience. Limited interactivity: Virtual events may not provide the same level of interactivity as in-person events, which could lead to a less engaging experience for attendees. It may be challenging to facilitate activities and experiences that are interactive and engaging in a virtual environment. Decreased revenue: With the shift to a virtual event, there may be a risk of decreased revenue due to the lack of in-person attendance and potential difficulties in monetizing a virtual event. Made up of the typefaces Butler and Calluna Sans, we found that combining these with the established nelson branding would enable us to help elevate the brand in place while differing our event away from those before without taking from the established familiarity the audience has with it. This would provide flexibility and convenience, which could increase participation and interest in the event overall. Physical elements were crucial in making the event more than just a screen experience and capturing children's attention. In addition to our print materials, we developed a core component of our kit: The Big Picnic Blanket. This blanket was designed to double as a map, allowing children to color and create on it using markers, while also serving as a source of activities. The project began with preliminary user research, which involved data collection, deep reading, interviews with friends and family members connected to the industry, and the creation of user personas to identify the pain points that my product would address. The challenge of translating this research into not only a functional and user-friendly app but also an engaging commercial that effectively advertised the app's unique selling points was an exciting and rewarding experience. In the end, the Auto-Ride project showcased my ability to combine research, UX/UI design, and storytelling to create a comprehensive and appealing solution for a hypothetical self-driving ride-sharing app. The project also highlighted the importance of considering user needs and pain points in the design process, ensuring that the final product is both useful and appealing to the many categories of the given target audience. 01 First Advertisement The first advertisement was concepted to capture the audience's attention while also explaining the app's process without using any dialogue. This approach challenged my visual storytelling skills and pushed me to develop a clear and engaging narrative. After writing several drafts to refine the storyline and ensure its simplicity and impact, I enlisted the help of a friend to film the commercial. Together, we brought the concept to life, creating a compelling advertisement that effectively showcased the app's unique features and benefits without relying on verbal explanations. The final result was a visually striking and easily understandable advertisement that demonstrated my ability to create engaging and persuasive visual narratives, even in the absence of dialogue, even making quick directorial decisions on the fly. The production required submitting for a few permits or permissions, location scouting, post production, color grading, music editing, and more. 02 Second Advertisement The objective of the second advertisement was to provide a clear and comprehensive understanding of the app's user experience, specifically within the context of a self-driving car. This commercial aimed to showcase the seamless integration of the app with the autonomous vehicle technology, emphasizing the convenience, safety, and efficiency it offers to users. The production required minor location scouting, rehearsal, post production, color grading, music editing, and even a first time acting appearance from yours truly after someone on set had a last minute COVID exposure. (They are happy healthy now, and actively working on some great animations, wishing you well paul!) 03 App Walkthrough Here's a walkthrough video of the application designed for the commercial, showcasing the tablet version of the app, designed in Figma. In this video, you'll see a step-by-step demonstration of the app's features and functionalities, providing a comprehensive overview of how the app works and interacts with the self-driving car technology. The walkthrough covers various aspects of the app, such as: The user onboarding process, including account creation and personalization options.The process of scheduling a ride, including selecting the pick-up and drop-off locations, date and time, and preferred vehicle type.The navigation interface, which offers real-time route updates and estimated arrival times.In-app communication with the self-driving car, allowing users to monitor the vehicle's progress and make adjustments if necessary. My goal was to develop a concept that captured the rich and unique history of the theatre, the personality and culture of the performing artists, and the vibrant emotions of the Kansas City Jazz Scene. To achieve this, I drew inspiration from past designers such as Paula Scher and Wolfgang Weingart, as well as the Swiss Punk design movement, which focuses on remixing and recycling old ideas – much like modern Jazz artists do with classic Jazz music. The journey to finalizing the visual language of these posters was extensive and involved multiple rounds of rapid iteration and experimentation with different modes of image-making.
